Sealmaster Helps Snack Food Manufacturer Increase Bearing Life Times Four

Maintenance engineers at an international snack food manufacturer were dissatisfied with the bearing life they were experiencing using graphite insert bearings (essentially bushings) on ovens being used to bake chips. The bearings were continually exposed to temperatures of at least 350 degrees at slow operating speeds and were only lasting about three months, which was creating a great deal of extra maintenance and downtime. In this food plant environment it was critical to have a bearing design that could withstand high temperatures, retain lubricant with minimal seal drag and that did not require frequent relubrication for sanitation reasons.
Kaman Industrial Technologies, the local Emerson Power Transmission distributor, was asked for a recommendation on a maintenance free, high temperature, bearing design. Working with the local Emerson Power Transmission representative and consulting with Sealmaster application engineering, Kaman specified a reduced maintenance version of an existing Sealmaster® high temperature bearing. The Sealmaster reduced maintenance bearing design dramatically extends service life compared to standard bearings due to a patented “tapered lands” bearing race profile. The tapered lands feature allows for the maximum utilization of grease within the bearing.
Sealmaster reduced maintenance bearings are perfect for applications where bearing lubrication is not practical or desired. This design helps achieve maximum service life in “lubed for life” applications.

The company installed the high performance bearings in their ovens and maintenance personnel were extremely pleased to note that the Sealmaster bearings delivered four times the life of the previously used graphite bearings. In addition, Kaman reported that the extended life of the Sealmaster bearings allowed them to report a documented cost savings to their customer.
