Flour Mill Transitioning to Browning® Gearboxes
|
|
A large flour processing plant in Chester Illinois was experiencing
frequent chain failure with an incline screw conveyor that fed flour to the
unloading section of the facility. At the time, the company was using an inline
gearbox with a sprocket that was rotating the screw conveyor with a chain.
Because of environmental dust from flour processing, the chain was clogging and
failing. The maintenance crew was having further trouble when they replaced the
chain because it was expensive and difficult to install. In addition, the chain
was extremely noisy, which bothered plant workers.

The plant contacted Mike Wilhelm and Kevin Raymond of Applied Industrial Technologies
who suggested the company replace the competitor's gearbox with a Browning C-face shaft
mount screw conveyor unit. The unit features a barrier seal system to protect
against the large quantities of dust common to flour processing. In addition,
tapered roller bearings on all shafts are available for maximum load carrying
capacity and commercially available bearings and seals make maintenance
trouble-free. Carburized and ground gearing also provided the plant with a
higher rating capacity in less space. The C-face shaft mount was also much
quieter and featured a variable frequency drive to speed the unit up or slow it down.

The plant’s maintenance team was extremely satisfied with the easier installation
of the C-face shaft mount screw conveyor unit and its quiet operation.
According to Emerson Power Transmission’s District Sales Manager, Todd Lotspeich,
“It’s been a great transition. Operations are running smoothly and they cannot
wait to get the rest of the replacement gearboxes installed.” The food company
was so happy with the replacement gearboxes that they budgeted for three
additional Browning units in their next fiscal year.
